EXT. QUEENSTOWN SUBURB - MORNING
A KIA bird flies over rows of houses, finally resting on a street sign “AOTEAROA”. Engines revving and screeching tires are heard, causing the bird to fly off. Two CARS come racing down the street and park in adjacent driveways.
EXT. DRIVEWAYS - MORNING
The door of the red car cracks open a sliver, then slowly opens with a long screech. A WALKING STICK appears followed by a pair of old lady shoes.
The same sequence is repeated with the white car.
GRANNY - Ha ha! I beat you!
Granny peers over her red car.
NANNA - You absolutely did not!
GRANNY - Did too!
The two ladies start bickering as they close their car doors with their walking sticks.
GRANNY (CONT’D) - I beat you, just like I beat you with the roses this year. I got three more buds than you!
NANNA - Ha! Well need I remind YOU of the Rotary Bake Challenge...
Granny gets a look of horror in her eyes.
CUT TO:
INT. COMMUNITY CENTER - DAY
Nanna stands behind her gorgeous PAVLOVA as a man pins a first prize ribbon on her. Down the other end of the long table, Granny looks defeated as her gingerbread house collapses.
CUT TO:
EXT. DRIVEWAYS - MORNING
Nanna grins, knowing that she has “won” this argument.
SEAN (O.C.) - Hi Nanna!
Nanna turns to see her grandson SEAN (18) getting out of his car.
SEAN (CONT’D) - Hello Mrs. Mitchell!
GRANNY - Hello Sean.
NANNA - What have you got there?
SEAN - Oh, this is that world travel album I told you I was making.
Nanna’s eyes light up.
NANNA - Oh my word, how exciting! Lets take a look on the poop deck...
Sean helps Nanna up onto her porch.
NANNA (CONT’D) - Come on over and take a look!
GRANNY - Oh no no! I have a lot to do today...
SEAN - Come on Mrs. Mitchell!
Granny hesitates but gives in. Sean sits sandwiched between the two. He opens the album titled “World Travel”.
SEAN (CONT’D) - This is me surfing in Australia.
Sean points to photos of him from various countries. Nanna counts them as Granny tries to look unimpressed.
NANNA - Six countries! My word!
Granny abruptly gets up and totters back to her place.
EXT. DRIVEWAYS - MORNING
A young man of about 17 is Sitting in his beat up car. He stares at a $50 note in his hands.
CUT TO:
INT. GRANNY’S LIVING ROOM - DAY
Granny glares into the camera, addressing her grandson.
GRANNY - Now go travel the world my dear, and be sure to take lots of photos!
She grins and hands over a $50 note.
CUT TO:
INT. JAMES’ CAR - AFTERNOON
James looks defeated. He turns the radio on and starts to drive along the coast. James looks over at the gorgeous scenery, stops and parks his car. He looks at the surfers and then at his camera on the passenger's seat.
MONTAGE SEQUENCE
As the music from the radio plays, various shots are intercut with James driving along the beautiful and varied landscapes of Queenstown.
James fly fishing
James partaking in a rugby game in a dry field
James snow shoeing
James hiking with a volcano in the background
James singing and drinking in a bar
James trekking through a rainforest
EXT. DRIVEWAYS - LATE AFTERNOON, SEVERAL DAYS LATER
James pulls up to Granny’s house. He grabs the album on his passenger seat and walks towards the house.
EXT. GRANNY AND NANNA’S HOUSES - DUSK
A beautiful light falls on their homes.
NANNA - James?
JAMES - Oh, hello Mrs. Milner!
NANNA - What have you got under your arm, dear?
JAMES - Oh, this? Its just a travel albu...
GRANNY (O.C.) - James! Yoo hoo - come here and give your granny a kiss!
James walks towards Granny and plants a kiss on her head.
GRANNY (CONT’D) - Come and sit down so we can see all the lovely places you have been!
Granny motions to Nanna with a sly grin.
GRANNY (CONT’D) - Will you join us?
NANNA - Oh no no, I was just going to check my mail box...
JAMES - Come on Mrs. Milner. Join us!
Nanna hesitates at first, then walks towards Granny’s porch. James is sitting between the two. He carefully opens a cover that is embossed with the word “Travel”.
GRANNY - Ohh, my word!
James’ photos are almost identical to Sean’s.
NANNA - This must be Australia. Sean has almost exactly the same photo! Gold Coast?
JAMES - Actually Mrs. Milner - this is Neils beach...
Nanna and Granny look surprised.
NANNA - Well I know that this one must be Norway. The only place where you can fly fish in such beautiful surroundings is Norway.
Nanna grins, proud that she knows her geography.
JAMES - Actually Mrs. Milner, this is the Mataura River.
NANNA - Huh...
They continue to go through the photos...
NANNA (CONT’D) - Switzerland?
James shakes his head.
NANNA (CONT’D) - South Africa?
JAMES - Nope...
NANNA - Hawaii?
James shakes his head again. Nanna, taken aback, is clearly impressed.
NANNA (CONT’D) - Who would have thought that our very own backyard had the best of the world!
Nanna struggles to get up off the bench. James comes to her aid and she totters back to her house.
NANNA (CONT’D) - Thank you James - for sharing that with me.
James smiles and sits back down next to his grandmother. Granny places a hand on James’ leg and pats it.
A Kia bird flies onto the railing of Granny’s porch. Granny and James stare at it for a moment before it flaps its wings and flies off into a breathtaking sunset.

Kia ora Aya. I enjoyed your script about our beautiful country. Just one thing I do want to comment on and it's not a biggy to non NZers but its actually a KEA bird not a kia. Congrats again on a good script.

Congratulations Aya, your idea is adorable, and some of your film is already in your animations. The Grannies are great! Notable is, that you are the ONLY chosen finalist who has WOMEN in your cast. Considering that there are considerably more women in NZ than men, and there is a strong Maori women's tradition, I'm glad that at least one of the finalists is honoring the women. Good luck and have a great time!

Cute animation, nice idea but I think a little dialogue-heavy. However, I like the juxtaposition (again) of age and youth, the idea of 'young' teaching the 'old' while the 'old' play childish games. So a lot of subtle connotations here... I look forward to the finished film.

Hi Patrick!
Thanks for stopping by! The script may read long as the action on page in some instances takes seconds so would take up a lot less "real" time. That being said, you may be right in which case some of the montage sequence or Kea (which I now know how to spell - whops!) can always be cut in pre prod or during post. I appreciate the feedback!

Hi Truly,
Thanks for taking the time to watch my pitch! While I appreciate your feedback, I was a little taken back at your "only an assistant" reference (inferring that assistants can't make good movies or write scripts?). It should be noted that many great directors have had less than "glitzy" jobs prior to making it (Clint Eastwood was a pool installer, Tarantino worked at a video rental joint and Spike Jonze worked at a surf shop)...
Truly said...
Definitively tell that you are only an assistant trying. Its is ok - but too long and pulled out and boring. Can you imagine people wanting to sit down and watch and ad of old people talking to each other. CLICK OFF. It just isn't attention grabbing. Sorry.
