Story by:Sun Liang & Bi Kanming

1.INT. Day Hall to a Chinese old fashioned residential building
The mailbox is opened. The faces of an old Chinese couple appear. They are wearing winter coats, their movements slow and clumsy.
The Grandpa reaches inside the mailbox, takes out a small blue parcel, and hands it over to Grandma. Grandma strokes the parcels with her both hands, trying to read the words on its package facing the light. Grandpa, having found his presbyopic glasses, fixes his eyes on the parcel label and smiles to Grandma.
The parcel label reads: Address: New Zealand.

2.INT. Day The Post Office in a small town in New Zealand
A parcel label, being filled out by a Chinese boy, who is writing the word “China” in the receiver’s address.
The boy is dressed like a backpacker. What’s strange about him is that on his huge backpack hang several tubes of various sizes and shapes, all swinging in the sunshine with the boy’s each movement.

3.INT. Day The Old Couple’s Condominium
The Grandpa and Grandma are sitting at the table, looking at the small parcel on it, looking happy as if their grandson is right in front of them.
They have sat like this happily for a long time, until the slanting sunshine pouring in from the window has changed from an acute angle to an obtuse angle and the old clock in the wall suddenly strikes.
Grandma pokes Grandpa, signaling him to open the parcel. Grandpa takes a small sealed can from the parcel. On the surface of the small can, is attached a picture of the forest scenery. Grandpa shakes the can. There is no sound. He then weighs it in his hand.
Grandma pokes him again, encouraging him to open it. Grandpa unseals it with discreetness. Grandma comes closer to look at it attentively.
The can is empty.
The couple looks at each other, smiling. Then with great care, they solemnly put the can on the most obvious spot on the desk. The afternoon sun shines on it, making its rim glitter.

4.Pieces of Montage (with incidental music)
The mailbox is opened again and again, the old couple’s faces appearing repeatedly, taking out a small blue parcel each time. The couple’s clothes change with different seasons.
The cans on the desk accumulate with time. They are of various colors and shapes. But none of them is unsealed, except the first one. The scenery pictures on the cans line up, like a contracted hallway depicting the landscape of New Zealand.

5.Ext. Day A Chinese old-fashioned Residential Building

The old couple has put on their winter coats again, waiting for their grandson, only this time, the Grandpa is in a wheelchair.

6.Ext. Day Bus Stop
The boy gets off the bus, pushing the crowd apart, looking anxious.

7.Ext. Day A Chinese old-fashioned Residential Building

The boy runs towards his grandparents, hugging this Grandma tightly.

8.INT. Day The old couple’s condominium

The boy is sitting between his grandparents, 12 cans on the desk in front of them.
Grandma is holding and stroking the boy’s hands.
Grandpa:
We fear that we might waste the moment, so ….
Grandma:
So we decided to wait till you come back, so we can do it together.
(Music gradually appears)
The boy takes a can from the desk, screws it open with much strength. The can opens with a pop. The old couple is amazed by this strange sound. With the opening of the can, a rush of air pops out, and the boy’s hair on his forehead is blown up.

9.Ext. Day Queen’s Town bungee jumping
The boy’s plunging facing. His hair on the forehead is pulled to the back of his head by the air. He is stretching out his arms, with one hand holding a can tight. With a scream, the boy falls from the dangerous cliff.

10. Pieces of Montage
(Incidental music)
The Waitomo Cave on a summer night: A boat paddling across on the surface of an underground river in the cave, separating the water in the stream. The boy keeps his face to the shipboard, his ear close to the can. With the boat sliding across the water, rushes of wind is blowing into the can.

In the penguin habitat in Taiaroa Head: The boy with a can in his hand, runs wildly across the reefs where penguins are basking. He hears the popping sound while wind is blowing into the can.

In Kaikoura near the Christ City: A huge water column suddenly appears on the ocean surface. A huge whale’s back appears above the water surface. The boy has his life vest on, is holding a can, with the whale behind him.

In Orakei Korako Geyserland: The mud pond is bubbling with boiling heat. The boy lowers himself and puts the can as close as possible to the mud pond.

In Rotorua:The Maoris are singing and dancing around the bonfire. The boy is stretching his both arms, spinning and dancing. The can in his hand is making a popping sound.

Inside the Great Holy Sanctuary in the Christ City: The sun pouring in from the windows surrounded with roses. The boy puts the can in the colorful sun beams and closes his eyes with the Holy songs ringing inside the Sanctuary.

In the library of a university: The boy is walking faster and faster in the quietness, and soon he is running. He accelerates along the straight corridor, and finally stops at a gigantic book shelf, smashing the opened can against the spines of books on the shelf. He smells that line of books, moving his hand along the book spines carefully to cover the opening of the can, afraid that the air in it may escape. He is pressing the can tight with both his hands. At this moment, a pretty New Zealand girl approaches him. They seal the can with honey, wax and thin lines they prepared beforehand.
(The possible sites could be more or less than the above)
Other optional sites: The Huka Waterfall, forests, the Rainbow Farm, etc.

11.INT. Day The old couple’s condominium

The boy sits in between his grandparents. 12 opened cans are on the desk in front of them.
The three of them are breathing in with deep breaths, as if bewitched.
