BACK 2 PURITY

EXT. GARDEN IN QUEENSTOWN - DAY
IAN, late 20’s, New Zealander, something wild about him, he is holding a PHOTOGRAPH of JOHN (same age as IAN, glasses): they both have big friendly smiles.
IAN
(To us)
Is it on?
VOICE
Yep, it’s on.
He talks directly to us.
IAN
Hi, everybody. My name is IAN and this is my good friend JOHN. We live in New Zealand and we are working on an idea that is going to change humanity. Our quest? Purity.
IAN POINTS TO the background.
IAN
We are in New Zealand, the youngest country in the world. It was the last country on earth that any human ever set foot on, this beautiful land stayed pure and green and uninhabited longer than any other place on earth. So if one wants to find purity this is the place to do it.

IAN (VO)
We believe that the cause for human unhappiness is because we reached a summit in the evolution process and therefore we lost our connection with the land…

IAN (VO)
--And because the brain is not prepared to deal with a rupture with nature, one feels restless and looks for answers in pleasures that apparently would bring happiness back - but it’s a temporary happiness, not a pure one.
INSERT – DRAWINGS

IAN (VO)
The answer we found is that like thousands of years ago we were pure…

IAN (VO)
Then we became HO”MODERN”SAPIENS…
CIRCLE around the MODERN MAN…
IAN (VO)
And everything was like ruined. Purity was lost. Our answer? We need to go back to our purest form and regain everything we have lost.
AN ARROW POINTING TO THE MONKEY.
EXT. QUEENSTOWN MALL - DAY
Ian is walking near the TOURIST SHOPS.
IAN (CONT.)
In our view all animals are the same, so me and John figured we could go back to an animal that has a special meaning for us New Zealanders…
He picks up a KIWI PUPPET on sale from a basket.
IAN (CONT.)
– THE KIWI!
EXT. IAN AND JOHN HOUSE - DAY
IAN is walking through a garden into a SHED. “NO NOISE” signs on the way there.
IAN
(Whispering)
We are going to meet John now… For the last 3 weeks JOHN as been living like a KIWI…
IAN opens the SHED door…
INT. SHED - DAY
WE ARE INSIDE A SHED WITH LOW LIGHT AND A BIG WOODEN BOX (HUMAN SIZE), in the Background, the BOX is FULL OF BREATHING HOLES.
(IAN POINTS TO THE BOX – JOHN’s eye is peeping through one of the holes)
IAN
(whispering)
And very soon the process will be complete. He will be released in the wild! But I’ll tell you about that in a sec, first ROBERT here…
WE PAN and catch ROBERT, a KIWI MAN, Army type.
IAN
…will tell us a bit about the costume John is going to wear. Robert is a survivalist, a Kiwi expert and the inventor of the 5 SQUARE MEAL. We are so happy he is with us!
(Ian goes in the back and starts feeding John through a hole…)
ROBERT
This suit is double insulated, and it’s lightweight to facilitate movement, but strong enough to defend JOHN from a Possum attack.
(HE SHOWS THE BEAK OF THE COSTUME THAT HAS A STRAW INSIDE)
ROBERT
It has a special straw that goes along the beak will provide an easy access to supplies. The food will be in liquid form of course. It’s a special recipe made from the original 5 SQUARE.
He Picks up a packet of 5 SQUARE – a special multi-vitamin tablet – an obvious homage to the 3 SQUARE MEAL. (isn’t it the one square meal?)
ROBERT
I make these myself – vitamins and all the nutrients you need, in liquid form.
IAN comes back. Robert leaves.
IAN
Now Robert is going to prepare JOHN and there is something we have to do. Come along!
EXT. WOODS OF QUEENSTOWN – DAY
IAN SHOWS US SOME JARS WITH LIQUID FOOD INSIDE A WOOD BOX. Next to IAN is a RANGER.
IAN
We have different jars, each one containing 5 different SQUARE shakes made by Robert. All these shakes enriched with extra vitamins. The boxes will be spread in this area to provide John with an abundance of food. But he doesn’t know where the boxes are, he will have to find it using his pure instinct!
IAN GOES AND PREPARES A BOX. WE STAY WITH THE GUARD

What made you come to this project?
RANGER
I´m very proud to be a part of this. I think these guys are into something. And I’m a big fan of Rob’s food! 5 SQUARE FOOD!
INT. HOUSE OF JOHN AND IAN – AFTERNOON
ROBERT comes to the door.
ROBERT
(talking to IAN)
He is a little agitated, I think only you should come in. We should turn of the camera until we put JOHN in the van…
IAN
Ok guys, camera off for now. See you all in a bit!
INT. VAN - AFTERNOON
Robert is driving. IAN is giving us the thumbs up. BEHIND THEM IS THE BOX WITH HOLES. THE KIWI BEAK comes out of one hole.
EXT. BUSH - NIGHT – WITH NIGHTSHOT FX
The box is out of the van. Robert opens the box. JOHN – IN THE KIWI SUIT COMES OUT, SHY. Robert and IAN try and make him leave. He finally goes and disappears into the bush.
EXT. BUSH - NIGHT – WITH NIGHTSHOT FX
WE ARE LOOKING AT A BOX LYING ON THE GROUND IN THE BUSH
IAN (OFF)
We’ve been here for a couple of hours and still no John, I hope he finds the boxes, he must be hungry…
JOHN comes out from the woods in the KIWI SUIT, looking for the box… IAN and ROBERT laugh in a whisper, we can feel their excitement.
IAN (OFF)
LOOK at that! It’s beautiful! He made it!
JOHN starts trying to open the box with the beak. JOHN is struggling there, finally his hand comes from inside the suit and opens the box, very quickly the hand disappears again inside the suit. JOHN STARTS SUCKING THE FOOD THROUGH THE STRAW)
Ian comes in front of the camera…
IAN
We did it. Purity is achieved. 100% PURENESS. John is a legend. He´ll have his face on a banknote. Mark my words. Face on a banknote!
MY WORK AND EXPERIENCE:
I’ve been working in Film and Television for 13 years, in Portugal and UK. I have a BA in Film in Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema, Lisbon. I’ve have worked professionally as a Sound Operator, Editor, Director and Scriptwriter. I’m currently editing my first long feature Film which I wrote, directed and produced with some friends in Portugal. It was shot in HD Video.
I can operate video editing systems and sound editing systems and software.

My Big Break…
When I was living in Wellington I used to dream that one day I would be driving that road to Miramar on my way to edit my film in Park Road Studios. New Zealand is close to my heart. My girlfriend is a New Zealander. And of course having my work seen by Peter Jackson and Barry Osborne is just overwhelming!
